Lucy’s mother Beth’s dying wish is to have her ashes returned to the place of her youth, a time and place Lucy has no knowledge of. Lucy also wants to find out about her father, something else Beth has never mentioned. In addition, upon Beth’s death, Lucy finds she has inherited Winter Cottage from Catherine. So her trip to Virginia is three-fold, to honour her mother’s last wish, to find her father, and to claim her inheritance. This is a tale of 3 generations told by Claire (Catherine), Beth, and Lucy. The characters are well developed, However, it all came together beautifully in the end. A compelling mystery and love story.

The author switches between the two time periods effortlessly and easily which doesn’t always happen in these kinds of books. Each storyline had a richness that was only strengthened by the comparison and contrast to the other.
