This book is a worthwhile read for a number of reasons. First, the story of the Oakland A’s is interesting in its own right. Additionally, embedded in this book are details of some recent advances in baseball statistics. Reading this book will provide some explanation as to why you now see stats such as OPS (On-Base Plus Slugging) prevalently displayed on major sports networks such as ESPN. Overall, this book is great for anyone interested in making predictions with statistics or fantasy sports leagues. It distils in an incredibly intuitive manner finding indicators of success and how these indicators can be used to predict an individual’s contribution to the total number of wins. Obviously, these ideas have broad application outside of sports. Michael Lewis’s style is also great. It’s efficient and clear.
