“The Ragged Edge of Night” is a love story, a personal drama, and an excellent historical view into the daily lives of one rural, German family during the Second World War. Olivia Hawker is the great author of this book. “The Ragged Edge of the Night” is a beautifully-written novel based on true events. Taking the story of her husband’s maternal grandparents, Olivia Hawker created not only an unlikely love story but a truly magnificent historical fiction, in which light finally shines even after the darkest night. Anton, a former friar whose order has been disbanded, answers a newspaper ad, in which a widow with three children had placed what seemed to him a call for help. She was merely looking for a provider for her family that struggled in hungry wartime years, a father to her children; finding a husband for herself appeared to be the furthest thing from her mind, but she was nevertheless willing to sacrifice her own feelings for her children’s sake. Anton is an incredibly likable person. His resilience, his unwavering determination to stand up for what is right, his selfless desire to help and protect the ones in need (let it be his new wife Elisabeth and her children, Germans chased off their lands in Czechoslovakia, or schoolchildren in his charge) demonstrate that a truly good person never loses his moral compass even in the darkest of times. His further involvement with the resistance only made we admire him even more, and particularly taking into account the danger in which he’d placed him by doing so. The prose is absolutely outstanding and praise-worthy. Overall, this is one of the most beautiful and beautifully written books about the Germans’ experiences during the Hitler era.
