This is a fantastic YA novel that explores the way culture and expectations shape one girl’s life. Rukhsana has a girlfriend, Ariana, that she must keep a secret from her very strict Muslim parents. Although Ariana and Rukhsana’s friends understand that her parents are strict, they have no idea of how strict they are and what the outcome will be if they ever discover their daughter is gay. Of course, Rukhsana and Ariana are caught kissing, and from there, things spiral downward. Rukhsana’s parents take their daughter back to Bangladesh, where they visit family, but where they also plan to marry their daughter off quickly so they can fix the lifestyle choices she has made. This is definitely a thought-provoking book as the ideas of culture, tradition, and religious beliefs are explored. In fact, is a wonderful story about family and culture and clashes and people and secrets.
