“The Final Day” is a very realistic book. William R. Forstchen and Bronson Pinchot are the authors of this book. First hens two previous books in this series, One Second After and One Year After. Turn off your tv, Internet and even your cell phone. You are going to be absolutely enveloped in this description of what would happen if an EMP were to fry American life as we know it. Great writing, of course, great plot development, and thinking all were involved in the writing of this book. The Matherson trilogy is some of his best work yet. It is a post-EMP epic that is firmly fixed in place (North Carolina) and sympathy for the survivors, who are led by a man who is a former Army colonel, teacher of history, and bereaved husband and father. His admirable, human qualities are what make this trilogy stand out in the genre. His cold, shrunken world is full of believable details that somehow convey a genuine sense of nostalgia for what was lost on the Day. The clash with the reconstituted federal government was set up in the previous volume and the climactic battle with Fredericks. Now, however, Matherson comes into contact with a former mentor and the consequences reach beyond his own community. It is exciting, sad, and hopeful. The Chinese occupation is mentioned but without detail, and the same is true of the rest of the world. The story of America’s struggle is surprisingly limited in scope, but effective nonetheless. This book can be read alone but we would absolutely recommend that a new reader get the full pleasure of reading the entire trilogy.
