by Richie Narvaez
The “Hipster Death Rattle” is an important book with vibrant characters and a message that echoes far beyond the final page. Richie Narvaez is the author of this book. Richie Narvaez’s first mystery novel, “Hipster Death Rattle,” drenches the reader in the life of the Williams-burg section of Brooklyn, it’s bodegas, bars, the thumping diverse city life, and the threat of gentrification that could silence the streets as the immigrant melange that made the neighborhood hip is being forced out by high real estate prices to meet the demands of the newcomers, the hipsters. It’s a story as old as civilization.
But in Narvaez’s Williams-burg, someone his slashing hipsters to death, perhaps as a warning that change is not welcome. But are there copycat slashes? And why did Rosa Irizarry have to die? The tightly woven story is filled with loud, colorful characters and others with worry in their hearts, a wonderful mix. In short, it is a wonderfully written mystery that leaves the reader satisfied.
